Alert dogs for life
My name is Billy and my story began on March 26, 2007, when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I am in the small subset of Diabetics who don’t wake up when their blood sugar is too high or low. So my mom began to look into Diabetic Alert Dogs. It took her over two years to find a dog for me. What was even more surprising was that it would have cost us $15,000. However, my younger sister got wind of my mom’s plans some how and decided to have a fundraiser for her 11th birthday. She ended up raising every penny. I got my Diabetic Alert Dog on September 17, 2009. Her name is Cindy and she is a German Shepherd. She has told me countless times when my blood sugar was either high or low and I didn’t know it. I feel comfortable going to sleep now because I know that she will tell me when my blood sugar is out of range.
